St. Vincent Health names new CEO from Valparaiso

The next CEO of Indianapolis-based St. Vincent Health will come from a for-profit hospital system in northwest Indiana.

Jonathan Nalli, 39, has been CEO since 2007 of Porter Health System, an affiliate of Tennessee-based Community Health Systems Inc. Based in Valparaiso, Porter operates two hospitals, six outpatient centers and numerous physician practices.

Nalli will become CEO of St. Vincent on Feb. 1, the hospital system announced Tuesday. The Indianapolis-based Catholic hospital system operates 22 hospitals around Indiana, employing about 16,500 people. It reported revenue of $2.8 billion in its most recent fiscal year.

St. Vincent is an affiliate of St. Louis-based Ascension Health, the nation’s largest Catholic hospital system.

He will replace Ian Worden, who has served as interim CEO since Vince Caponi stepped aside in July. Caponi remains executive chairman of the board for St. Vincent Health.
 
“As a proven healthcare executive with vast experience in growth management strategies, improvement plans and demonstrable results in achieving business objectives, we look forward to Jonathan leading the transformation of our business and building on the successes of our ministry,” said Caponi, in a prepared statement.
 
Before leading Porter Health, Nalli was chief operating officer of Chestnut Hill Health System in Philadelphia for two years. In addition, he served as chief operating officer of Pottstown Memorial Medical Center in Pottstown, Pa.
 
Nalli holds an MBA from Drexel University in Philadelphia, and his bachelor's of health sciences from the University of Kentucky.

    It's always sad to see comments based on emotion rather than FACTS. Can you possibly imagine employing 16,000+ people with all levels of professional/service responsibilities without 'revenue' (monies received)? What about the equipment, maintenance, supplies, food, utilities & emergency generators (to name only a few) to sustain care and life benefits for patients? What about an Emergency Department that accepts ALL in need regardless of insurance or ability to pay (Obama's plan couldn't begin to be better than the Church!). Hope you can now understand the difference between revenue and profit. Do NOT allow the propaganda of populous thinking that all 'big business' is bad rule your emotions - that's what it preys on! Without sensible 'business' leaders there would be no employment, benefits, services, or prosperity to share through your tax benefits. Thank God we can still think for ourselves (though barely) and express our views - hopefully, it will encourage 'more though' and 'less follow' among the masses...
  • Shameful
    Just a few months ago this hospital laid off nearly 900 people - that's downsizing. Now they're talking about growth again. You can't have both growth and lose people. It just doesn't work that way. How much is this new CEO going to make??? They've got money for his salary but couldn't hang onto the people that were let go!!!

    Someone please show me a true non-profit hospital. I don't understand why the IRS allows this to go on.

    “As a proven healthcare executive with vast experience in growth management strategies, improvement plans and demonstrable results in achieving business objectives..." ...is exactly what I do NOT want in my non-profit hospital!!! Getting further and further away from any faith-based health care provider by wanting to grow that $2.8 billion. Grrrrr
