Stretch of I-465 westbound reopens, several ramps still closed

The westbound lane of Interstate 465 reopened Friday afternoon on Indianapolis' northeast side following a tanker explosion Thursday that closed parts of the expressway in both directions.

The Binford Boulevard northbound ramp to I-465 westbound also reopened, after bridge inspectors determined the westbound bridge structurally safe to support traffic.

Testing continues on the eastbound 1-465 bridge, which is located directly above where the crash occurred. Test samples of the bridge structure were being sent via helicopter Friday afternoon to a testing facility, the Indiana Department of Transportation said.

At the very least, a damaged pillar will need to be replaced with either temporary or permanent supports, INDOT said.

I-465 eastbound remains closed between the U.S. 31/Meridian Street and the 56th Street/Shadeland Avenue interchanges.

Because Allisonville Road and Keystone Avenue are not equipped to handle high volumes of commercial traffic, eastbound I-465 traffic is being rerouted to U.S. 31.

Ramps that remain closed are: I-69 southbound ramp to I-465 southbound; I-465 eastbound ramp to I-69 northbound; I-465 eastbound ramp to Binford Boulevard southbound; and I-865 to I-465 on the northwest side.

The closings were caused by a liquid propane tanker that exploded on a highway ramp at I-69 and I-465, shooting a fireball of flames and black smoke into the sky.

  5. I remenber, watching the toll road, being built, through South Bend, when I was 10 years old. I believe, back then that it was estimated, that the toll road, would be paid for in 20 years and then it would be free. I am now 71, what happened? Since the power is in the people, by that, I mean that, we the people are in total control of everything. I, suggest that no one ever use the toll road again, let it go broke. We the people can control the price of everything, from groceries to gas, if we would just do it. If we don't pay the asking price, the sellers will lower the price and if we wait awhile, they will lower the price to what we accept as reasonable. I would like to know why a highway like interstate 94, is so well maintained, a much better highway, than the toll road, but has no tolls. I would also like to know why, a sitting governor, with a term limit, maximum of eight years, can lease, public property, for 75 years. Even though I have transponders in both of my trucks and will not be affected by the increase, I have been and will contine to avoid using the toll road. I make many trips from northern Indiana to Chicago, every year, and I prefer the better highway, I94!
