The new school year will begin with the largest enrollment ever at the University of Indianapolis, a private Methodist college on the south side of Indianapolis.

The school announced Wednesday that it now has more than 5,500 students, including both graduates and undergraduates. The school welcomes 1,100 new students this fall, including its second largest freshman class of 830 as well as larger numbers of transfer students.

UIndy’s record freshman class was 850, two years ago, but the university has tried to keep the total nearer to 800 in recent years.

“We’re trying to be intentional about our overall size and not pursue growth for growth’s sake, because we want to preserve the unique experience that we provide for our students and faculty,” said Mark Weigand, UIndy’s vice president for enrollment management.

UIndy recently opened Roberts Hall, its latest dormitory, which grew the school's residential capacity to 1,560 students. The rest of the student body lives off campus.

Weigand credited the university’s effort to keep more upperclassmen living on campus with boosting UIndy’s rate of returning students.
