If maintenance men had an Olympic event, the national Maintenance Mania Competition would be it.

Three maintenance workers of Indianapolis-based Van Rooy Properties swept the top three spots at the competition held recently in New Orleans. They beat out 3,000 contestants nationwide.

Medals went to David Garcia, who finished maintenance tasks in two minutes, five seconds, and to colleagues Herb Harr and Enrique Alarcon, who finished second and third.

If there were a Donald Davidson of the maintenance competition sport, he’d point out that this was the first time in the history of Maintenance Mania that all the top winners represented the same management company and the same association, in this case the Indiana Apartment Association.

The competition includes timing everything from door jamb installation, appliance and ceiling fan repair to smoke detector installation.

“The work that Van Rooy Properties puts into this competition each year is testament to their dedication to the contest, and that dedication spills over into the company’s maintenance program at its properties,” said Lynne Sullivan, executive director of the IAA.

The three have had lots of practice; Van Rooy has more than 11,000 rental units in the Midwest. The competition is sponsored by the National Apartment Association.
