The Nature Conservancy in Indiana recently acquired 282 acres in Brown County from the Girl Scouts of Tulip Trace Council.

The council disbanded last year and had to sell its assets—including the former Camp Belmont—to cover
a $1 million debt. The scouts in its 15 southern Indiana counties are now covered by other councils, including Central Indiana.

The former camp is within the Brown County Hills forest, Indiana’s largest continuous block of forest. The
Nature Conservancy has identified the region as one of three in the Midwest that are critical to breeding migratory songbirds.

The Nature Conservancy did not disclose the price of the property, which it intends to turn over to the Indiana
Division of Forestry.

The property is east of the Selma Steele Nature Preserve and west of Yellowwood State Forest.
