A 23-year-old Butler University student is now a step away from becoming mayor of a small central Indiana city.

Chris McBarnes won Tuesday's Republican primary in Frankfort with 60 percent of the vote over City Councilman John O'Brien,

McBarnes grew up in the 16,000-person city about 25 miles southeast of Lafayette and is a senior at Butler. Current independent Mayor Chris Pippenger announced last week that he wouldn't seek a second term and endorsed McBarnes.

McBarnes told The Times of Frankfort that he attributes his victory to getting out to meet people and listening to their concerns. He said some people laughed at his candidacy, but that the city's residents have reacted positively.

Democrats don't yet have a candidate for the November election.
