Ousted in the 2007 election, Anderson Mayor Kevin Smith is back in office and has brought with him economic development consultant Greg Winkler.

Winkler is now head of the city’s economic development department. His predecessor, Linda Dawson, a veteran staffer, retired last year.

Winkler worked as a consultant during Smith’s first term, and he was involved in landing the Nestle USA milk-bottling plant. Since 2007, he’s worked for Brevini Power Transmission, which is building gear boxes for wind turbines at a plant near Muncie.

Winkler said he’ll run the city’s economic development office like a sales organization, which means pitching Anderson to companies regardless of whether they’ve already expressed an interest in Indiana.

Smith, a Republican, defeated Chris Ockomon in last year’s municipal election.
