The Central Indiana Land Trust announced Thursday that it has purchased 55 acres of land south of Mooresville to ensure it remains protected from future development.

The Indianapolis-based not-for-profit bought the property at auction for $132,000 with the help of a grant provided by the Robert R. and Gayle T. Meyer Family Fund, a fund of the Central Indiana Community Foundation. The Indiana Heritage Trust and the Amos W. Butler Audubon Society also contributed.

The land was owned by the estate of a private owner.

Robert Meyer’s father, Fred Meyer, served on the board of the Indiana chapter of The Nature Conservancy and helped get the state’s first dedicated nature preserve established in 1969.

The Morgan County property, between State Road 67 and Observatory Road, is now part of the Fred and Dorothy Meyer Nature Preserve.

The land is home to rare native species including the state-endangered cerulean warbler and eastern box turtle.

When dedicated, the property will be one of more than 220 nature preserves in Indiana.
