Subscribe NowIt is clear that Richard Mourdock is an astringent to the derriere of Peter Rusthoven [Oct. 29 column]. How else does one explain why the luminous Lugar acolyte Rusthoven would attack Mourdock for Mourdock’s cumbersome locution for which he has apologized and clarified? It is unfortunate that Rusthoven sounds like a Democrat operative on retainer to Dan Parker.
While Rusthoven is a very well-respected and successful barrister, it is clear that in the area of theology he is an epigone. Using the sonorous tone of an Ivy League guest lecturer, Rusthoven would like us to believe his intent is to educate the unknowing reader who doesn’t understand such matters as Mourdock’s “bad theology” and enlighten us to the meaning of theodicy. This is mere prestidigitation.
After the lecture Rusthoven reveals the true nexus of his column: Mourdock had the gall to run against Lugar and beat him soundly in the May primary with Mourdock garnering 67 percent of the vote. Rusthoven is the most visible flag-waver for the diminishing and graying Lugar cult that wishes the former senator could be given the constitutionally untenable title: Senator Immortal. Thus, the disdain on Rusthoven’s part and his small cadre mostly residing in the Butler-Tarkington and Meridian-Kessler neighborhoods that describe themselves with the hubristic term “Lugar Republicans.”
Will these Lugar Republicans vote for Mourdock? If they have the Reagan underpinnings Rusthoven mentions, it is likely they will. However, if they remain as petulant, selfish, and defiant of reality as is Rusthoven, well… who knows.
