Indiana Senate approves new specialty plate limits

March 12, 2013

Indiana legislators have approved a proposal overhauling the state's specialty auto license plate system that requires all the groups with plates to sell 500 a year and undergo a financial review once a decade.

State senators voted 48-0 Tuesday in favor the plan that the House previously approved.

The bill would create an eight-member bipartisan commission to review requests from not-for-profits and universities seeking specialty plates. The panel would also check reports about how the groups are spending their proceeds from the plates.

The bill sets a limit of 150 specialty plates. Indiana now has about 100.
