Thank you for including the [Oct. 7] article on the Global AgeWatch Index and the need for societies to better prepare for the impact of an aging population.

Issues related to aging and what it means for one’s quality of life are complex and go beyond questions of Social Security or Medicare. Too often, seniors are viewed as a drain on society and its resources; but as this study shows, an aging population is not “economically damaged.” In fact, elder-friendly policies and programs tend to have a positive impact on the quality of life for everyone.

The process of aging is not simply a period of decline, and need not be purely a conversation about health care. As the article pointed out, older adults continue to seek opportunities to learn, participate in civic life, fulfill career ambitions and give back to their communities.
