Web startup Bookit planning expansion

July 7, 2014

Indianapolis Web startup Bookit Commerce Inc. plans to hire 93 people by 2018 as part of an expansion, the company announced Monday morning.

Bookit's three founders and seven part-time employees and interns currently operate in The Speak Easy, a coffee-shop-like entrepreneurial co-working space at 5255 Winthrop Ave. in the Meridian-Kessler area.

It plans to remain in the building, moving into 2,500 square feet of leased office space that was previously occupied by software firm Tinderbox. Bookit co-founder Myles Grote said the space should be large enough to house the first few dozen hires.

Two-year-old Bookit plans to pay an average of $22.87 per hour—or about $47,600 per year for full-timers—for a mix of engineering, sales, marketing and customer-service positions, Grote said.

Bookit operates the website bookacoach.com, which screens and reviews coaches and trainers and allows them to set up appointments with athletes. Subscriptions have grown from 1,000 coaches to 3,000 since the start of the year, partially driven by the acquisition of an Atlanta competitor.

Bookit reached a deal with the Indiana Economic Development Corp. to receive $875,000 in tax credits if it meets its job commitments. It also secured $56,000 in training grants.

The privately owned company, which secured $250,000 in venture capital earlier this year, declined to disclose financial information.

Grote acknowledged the expansion plans are aggressive for the tiny operation. But he doesn’t believe the growth spree will be too much for the startup to handle.

“If you go to some of the most successful startups here in Indianapolis … those guys, they had a solid growth plan in place and they really executed it,” he said.
