Airport Manager Frank Cade said work extending the runway from 5,200 feet to 6,000 feet should be finished within the next month.
Cade told the Kokomo Tribune that dirt work has been completed. The rest of the project will include grading, asphalt and lighting upgrades to the runways and taxiways. The airport is awaiting funds from the Federal Aviation Administration to finish the work.
The FAA is paying for 95 percent of the project. The agency already has spent about $8 million on related projects.
Cade says extending the runway will allow the airport to handle more corporate and freight jets.
