UPDATE: Indiana State Fair attendance tops 950,000

August 18, 2014

Nearly 955,000 people came through the gates for this year's Indiana State Fair, fair officials said Monday.

The fair ended its 17-day run Sunday with the third-highest attendance mark since the fair's schedule was extended by five days in 2009.

Last year's fair drew about 23,000 more people.

Fair officials say some 48,000 people visited the Indiana Beer and Wine Exhibition, where alcohol was served to fairgoers for the first time in nearly 70 years after a state law banning alcohol during the event was repealed.

The exhibition was open for eight hours each day, allowing Hoosier breweries and wineries to sell some of their craft beers and wines.

"The vendors that participated this year were really thrilled with how it went, and I'm guessing that word's going to get out to some of the other vendors," spokesman Andy Klotz said.

A state law that took effect in July opened the door to the first beer and wine sales at the fair since 1946.
