Pleasant Run snakes through the east side as a scenic relief in places such as Ellenberger Park, nurturing tall trees and
wildlife among an otherwise endless grid of streets.

The watershed has suffered from urban encroachment, however. Oil, fertilizer, trash and other materials contaminate the stream.
Signs from the Marion County Health Department warn of contact with the water. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management
has deemed the water’s health as “impaired.”

East-side residents, led by Sky Schelle, are out to save the watershed, and have formed The Friends of Pleasant Run. The
group is working toward developing a state-approved watershed management plan. Schelle is planning the first big public rollout
at 7 p.m. June 22 at Lutheran Child and Family Services, 1525 N. Ritter Ave.
The group has been asking for people to present ideas and to participate in the process, noted Ron Lauster, director
of the Marion County Soil and Water Conservation District, which has been supportive of watershed improvement efforts.
