Unruly shoppers flocking to purchase the newest generation of Air Jordan basketball shoe threw objects at police at one Indianapolis mall and ripped a door off its hinges at another.

Hundreds lined up at Castleton Square and Lafayette Square malls to purchase the retro shoe that went on sale early Friday morning.

After midnight, some shoppers waiting outside Castleton Square began throwing objects at local police, who had been called to restore order, said Kendale Adams, spokesman for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

Police were called to Lafayette Square at about 6:30 a.m. to control a crowd of about 300 shoppers. A door at the mall was ripped off its hinges as the crowd surged into a mall entrance, Adams said.

Some stores at both malls were forced to close their doors shortly after opening at 7 a.m. due to the chaos caused by the shoppers.

Several calls to Finish Line stores at both malls were met with busy signals Friday morning. A company spokeswoman did not return phone calls seeking comment.

The classic-style shoe that retails for $180 is causing quite a stir nationally.

The Associated Press reported that police in Seattle used pepper spray to break up fights among shoe buyers who pushed and shoved outside an area mall.

At least four people were arrested in a mad dash by customers hoping to purchase a pair of the shoes at a suburban Atlanta shopping mall.
