WXIN-TV Channel 59 is losing a television anchor, while WRTV-TV Channel 6 is bringing more talent to town to beef up its morning news staff.
Jenny Anchondo, the 4 a.m. to 6 a.m. co-host of Fox 59 News, starts work Oct. 21 at KDFW-TV Channel 4 in Dallas, according to KDFW’s website. She’ll be weekend morning news anchor.
Anchondo, a former pro football cheerleader, is moving up: Dallas is the nation’s No. 5 TV market; Indianapolis is No. 25.
She joined Fox 59 in September 2010 and previously worked at KOLD-TV in Tucson, among other stations.
From her bio, which still appears on WXIN’s website, it's hard to tell what Anchondo enjoys more: TV news or the fitness business. She’s also operated her own personal fitness training business. She has a workout show at 1 p.m. on Saturdays at jennyanchondo.com. She’s been a fitness instructor at the YMCA and a Zumba instructor at Gold’s Gym.
In June, WXIN lost another anchor to Texas when Walt Maciborsk left his 5 p.m. shift for a gig at KEYE-TV Channel 4 in Austin.
Meanwhile, rival WRTV-TV Channel 6 recently added two more people to its expanded "Good Morning Indiana" staff. It hired Katie Heinz, who covered the statehouse for WICS-TV in Springfield, Ill., as a multimedia journalist.
WRTV also tapped Lauren Casey, who attended Franklin College, as its traffic reporter.
Recently, the local ABC affiliate resumed weekend morning newscasts, hiring about eight people including anchor Jade Hindmon, who’d worked at WHNS-TV in Greenville, S.C.
It’s been a year of big changes at local stations. The big talker came this month, when former WISH-TV meteorologist Angela Buchman moved to WTHR-TV Channel 13. The popular Buchman bumped former WTHR chief meteorologist Chris Wright, who declined to accept a lesser role at the station and resigned.
WTHR faced a backlash of sorts on Internet boards from Wright fans. Perhaps not coincidentally, the NBC affiliate has been running on-air promotions touting Buchman’s Indiana roots.
Rascally WTHR also this year lured away WXIN’s VP and general manager, Larry Delia.
Tribune Co.-owned WXIN recently filled Delia’s post with Paul Rennie, who was general manager at Tribune stations KCPQ-KZJO-TV, in Seattle.
Rennie’s learning curve in Indianapolis should be short, having formerly been general sales manager at WRTV.
