Two candidates who oppose Tipton County's embrace of wind farm developments have won primary election contests in their bids for countywide seats.

Gerald Shuck defeated incumbent County Commissioner Phil Heron in Tuesday's Republican primary, while Jim Leffler bested Mike Orr in the GOP primary race for a County Council seat.

Leffler told the Kokomo Tribune that Tuesday's primary results show that residents are looking to stunt the development of wind farms.

Shuck said the primary results serve as a notice that citizens are not only looking for a change regarding the wind farm development in the county, but also for more transparent government.

Some county residents say they worry about the safety of towering wind turbines, while some farm owners are unhappy with the noises produced by the turbines.

E.ON Climate and Renewables of Chicago erected 125 turbines in in eastern Tipton County and northern Madison County in 2012 as part of the Wildcat Wind Farm. Colorado-based Developer juwi Wind is proposing a $300 million wind farm in the county with about 90 turbines.
