The Indianapolis Museum of Art is one step closer to establishing its first conservation science lab, which Conservator-in-Charge David Miller said would put the IMA on par with museums in New York, Chicago and Boston—at least in terms of technology.

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation is offering the IMA a $1.75 million challenge grant to establish an endowment to support the position of a conservation scientist. The grant will allow the museum to hire a senior scientist, who would then direct the building of a lab using $2.6 million granted last fall by Lilly Endowment Inc.

The new senior scientist, which Miller hopes to hire by the fall, would also help raise the Mellon foundation’s matching requirement—$1.5 million in three years.

Miller expects the new scientist, who will have expertise in artists’ materials, to work with the museum’s conservators and publish research based on the IMA’s collection.
