Indiana sends Congress tab for illegal immigration

Back to TopCommentsE-mailPrintBookmark and Share

Indiana's budget director calculates illegal immigrants have cost Indiana $130.9 million.

Budget Director Adam Horst sent Congress a bill for the amount Friday as required under Indiana's illegal immigration law passed last year by the General Assembly.

Congress is not expected to act on the request, however.

Indiana's law was modeled on the 2010 Arizona illegal immigration bill whose key provisions were struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday. Indiana's law also is being challenged in court.

Horst estimated $110.6 million of the state's illegal immigrant costs have been for K-12 education. He estimated prison costs at $12.3 million and welfare costs at nearly $8 million.

  • give me Liberty or give me death.
If Obama gets re-elected we're not done. We just take matters into our own hands. We the people can start "No illegals in my town, neighborhood,or schools 2013. report and deport make their lives hell like they are doing to us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Tab for illegal aliens
Many states tried this and got nowhere. At least you are sending a message. Actually this is a smal amount. Pennsylvania sent $1.6 BILLION on illegal aliens last year. They are starting to crack down with two bills working their way to approval. SB-9 and Sb-637 are for starters. This liberal democrap, Rep schwartzcopf, let our bill die in the House. He is a damn IDIOT!
  • An Estimate or Actual?
Horst and the Daniels machine should stop paying our tax money to the ILLEGAL'S!!! If they know where they're at remove them from the state of Indiana. Take them to DC and drop them off on Pennsylvania Avenue. We do not need to send some phony bill to DC just bus them to DC. Obviously, to prepare estimates you must know where they are at! Or is this the same as the crap numbers coming out of the Indiana Department of Revenue and it's just blatant garbage. Good luck Purdue perhaps Daniels can take Horst with him too. Good riddance!
  • Illegal is ...Illegal
When will this nation ever get it thru it's head that illegal means law breaking. legals immigration is healty with requirements. Learn English. Period.. Adopt US customs and laws and social considearations. BTW...it is probably too late to stop the American decline.
  • More you give, more good things come to you
I am glad to see so many people that share my opinion on illegals. We, Native Americans, have been waiting for centuries to get rid of illegals. Just leave, we won't even ask you to clean up your mess.
  • VOTE
If Obama gets re elected this country is DONE !!! I am an undecided voter and I realize this as we will fall as the GREAT NATION we are... Think about the BILLIONS we give to other countries as AID Well it's about time we dump the CANCER (ILLIGALS) WHERE EVER THEY ARE FROM and give AID TO OURSELVES .. How can we give money away we as a country do not have !!!!
    • Greene has it wrong
Greene you are wrong. If a false tax return is filed using names of people that are not in the US and it claims a refund, that is theft. If a false return is filed because it lists people who are not in the US as exemptions, and also seeks a refund, that is tax evasion and theft. And cheating the system is wrong.
    • In response to greene
Yes they are stealing money!!! My guess is you did'nt see the recent channel 13 news report about illegals filing false tax returns for children who don't even live in this country!! If that's not stealing i don't know what is!!!! Typical liberal thinking. The minute someone disagrees you resort to name calling!!!
    • Illegal immigration
If the Federal Government was doing its job and freeing this country of the illegal aliens, then the states wouldn’t be trying to take over. The states are bearing the costs of all these illegal aliens, not to mention the costs of deporting them. These illegal aliens are a very big burden to American taxpayers. Look at how many anchor babies the American taxpayers paid for at the cost of $4,500 per anchor. Last I heard, there were 4.3 million anchors that were handed a U.S. birth certificate like it was a piece of candy. The sooner we get rid of these illegal aliens, the better for all Americans. I’m not a republican, but I will be voting for one this time and pray to God he will get our immigration laws ENFORCED!
    • Why Oh Why?????
Each state should be able deport since it is the state's citizenship that really pays for them to be here; either in funds spent on them or in earnings diverted away from the citizenship or shipped out of the state and country. Apparently, from this article, Indiana knows how much tax dollars we're spending on educating illegal immigrants so we should know where those persons are. Obviously, if they are in our prisons, we already have them in custody. Why keep paying? Just export them! And why, oh why, do illegal immigrants qualify at all for our welfare tax dollars?
    • key phrase here
I'm sorry, but the key phrase here seems to be "illegal". At that point, they ARE stealing money, as being here illegally is SUPPOSED to be a crime as written by law.
    • SUE THEM
It's not enough to just send them a bill, they are just gonna laugh at it and throw it under a rug like they have everything else. Sue them, we want our money back...Have a tax on every moneygram that is sent to Mexico, these illegals are stealing form us to pay for more to come over the border

      1. Kent's done a good job of putting together some good guests, intelligence and irreverence without the inane chatter of the other two shows. JMV is unlistenable, mostly because he doesn't do his homework and depends on non-sports stuff to keep HIM interested. Query and Shultz is a bit better, but lack of prep in their show certainly is evident. Sterling obviously workes harder than the other shows. We shall see if there is any way for a third signal with very little successful recent history to make it. I always say you have to give a show two years to grow into what it will become...

      2. Lafayette Square, Washington Square should be turned into office parks with office buildings, conversion, no access to the public at all. They should not be shopping malls and should be under tight security and used for professional offices instead of havens for crime. Their only useage is to do this or tear them down and replace them with high rise office parks with secured parking lots so that the crime in the areas is not allowed in. These are prime properties, but must be reused for other uses, professional office conversions with no loitering and no shopping makes sense, otherwise they have become hangouts long ago for gangs, groups of people who have no intent of spending money, and are only there for trouble and possibly crime, shoplifting, etc. I worked summers at SuperX Drugs in Lafayette Square in the 1970s and even then the shrinkage from shoplifting was 10-15 percent. No sense having shopping malls in these areas, they earn no revenue, attract crime, and are a blight on the city. All malls that are not of use should be repurposed or torn down by the city, condemned. One possibility would be to repourpose them as inside college campuses or as community centers, but then again, if the community is high crime, why bother.

      4. Seems the biggest use of TIF is for pet projects that improve Quality Of Life, allegedly, but they ignore other QOL issues that are of a more important and urgent nature. Keep it transparent and try not to get in ready, fire, Aim! mode. You do realize that business the Mayor said might be interested is probably going to want TIF too?

      5. Gary, I'm in complete agreement. The private entity should be required to pay IPL, and, if City parking meters are involved, the parking meter company. I was just pointing out how the poorly-structured parking meter deal affected the car share deal.
