Gov. Mitch Daniels has appointed former Democratic state Rep. Carolene Mays of Indianapolis to the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission.

Mays was named Wednesday to fill the vacancy left by Jeffrey Golc, whose term expired Dec. 31.

Mays served in the Indiana House from 2002 until 2008, when she unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination for the 7th congressional district seat now held by Rep. Andre Carson.

She is the publisher and president of the Indianapolis Recorder newspaper and the Indiana Minority Business Magazine.

The five-member commission's responsibilities include overseeing the state's electric, natural gas and telephone utilities. State law allows no more than three of its members to be of the same political party.
