A 2005 graduate of North Central High School is returning to Indianapolis to anchor WTHR-TV Channel 13’s weekend morning newscasts.

Naomi Pescovitz will take the anchor chair on the Saturday and Sunday editions of “News Sunrise” beginning on July 9, as well as work as an “Eyewitness News” reporter three days per week, according to the local NBC affiliate.

Pescovitz most recently has worked as a reporter and fill-in anchor for ABC affiliate KSTP-TV Channel  5 in Minneapolis. Prior to that, she spent two years as a reporter at KVOA-TV Channel 4 in Tucson, Ariz. She was one of the first journalists on the scene Jan. 8, 2011, when U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot and seriously wounded at a grocery store outside of Tucson.

She is the daughter of prominent physicians Ora and Mark Pescovitz. Ora Pescovitz, a former CEO of Riley Hospital for Children, now is CEO of the University of Michigan Health System. Mark Pescovitz served as a professor of surgery at the Indiana University School of Medicine before dying in a 2010 car crash.

Born in Minneapolis, Naomi Pescovitz moved to Indianapolis before her first birthday. She graduated from North Central and went on to earn a double major in journalism and international studies in 2009 from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University.

Pescovitz “is a perfect fit for our team,” said WTHR News Director Kathy Hostetter, in a prepared release. “As an exceptional storyteller and journalist, we’re happy that she has chosen to return home.”

The weekend morning news desk recently was piloted by Nicole Pence, who abruptly left the station without explanation in November. A website that focuses on the TV news industry reported that she had been fired.

Pence has since been named the anchor for WXIN-TV Fox59’s 11 p.m. newscast, which is scheduled to debut later this month.

I graduated from NCHS in 1993. Considering Pescovitz graduated in 2005 that puts her in first grade at the time. I suppose that makes me old. Regardless, it's always good to hear about an alumnus doing well.
