Old National name to adorn Murat for three years

The century-old Murat Centre will be named the Old National Centre for the next three years.

Event promoter Live Nation on Tuesday put the new name in royal blue lettering above the marquee of the entertainment venue downtown. Evansville-based Old National Bank's name, logo and colors also will be emblazoned on entrance awnings, posters, video screens and even the drink menu behind the bar. And tickets that go on sale later this month will be printed with the new name.

Close to 400,000 people a year walk through the building's doors, said Kelly Ford, director of sponsorship sales for Live Nation in Indianapolis. Live Nation manages the former Murat Centre under a long-term lease. It also manages The Lawn at White River State Park and owns Verizon Wireless Music Center in Noblesville.

Live Nation and Old National executives would not disclose the value of the deal, first reported Monday on IBJ.com. Randy Reichmann, CEO of the bank's Indianapolis region, said he expects the relationship to last longer than the initial three-year contract. The bank is trying to gain market share in Indianapolis since acquiring 65 former Charter One branches a year ago.

"What we're hoping to drive is just more awareness of Old National Bank," Reichmann said.

Although Live Nation has more than 40 title sponsors at venues across the country, Ford said the local management team hasn't aggressively pursued a naming-rights deal. "Knowing this is a historic theater, you want to have the right partner," she said.

Ford said the deal with Old National sprang out of a regular lunch meeting to talk about marketing plans for 2010. The bank is already a sponsor at Verizon Wireless Music Center.

Reichmann, an avid concertgoer, said the relationship with Live Nation has worked well so far. In the past, the bank gave away free ticket vouchers to customers opening new checking accounts. He said he expects to leverage the sponsorship at Old National Centre in a similar fashion. 

The venues inside Old National Centre will retain their original names: Murat Theatre, Egyptian Room, Corinthian Hall, Grand Lobby and Crowne Room. The theater seats 2,500. The capacity of all venues combined is 4,515.

    Thank you for reminding me that Sears Tower was a corporate name already. You missed my point, but I'll gladly let you feel better by pointing out a fact that had nothing to do with what I said.

    I don't disagree with the sentiment and the desire to keep the old name. But Dustin, you do realize the Sears Tower was a corporate name already, right?? It just shows that it has more to do with losing what we're used to than the 'corporateness' of the name.

    I think this is ridiculous. The name of this venue is actually part of it's historic fabric. The whole "corporate branding" thing is so far out of hand anyway. Why not make it "The Old National Bank's Murat Center" or something like that.

    Old National should have kept their hands out of this one. Keep the Murat name alive.

    How pathetic and lame. I used to live near the Murat and always thought the name itself was actually a PART of the building's history and never ever imagined the name being stripped and replaced with a cheesy, bland, and stupid corporate sounding name. It's just like the Sears Tower being renamed to Willis. There's no charm or uniqueness about it anymore...

      As far as the cart safety team, I cannot find anything on its date of creation. The Delphi Safety team was created in 1996. For some reason there is not much info out there on defunct racing series.

    3. Great article Anthony. Glad IMS is finally being run like a business and not a personal check book to finance the "Vision".

      Things are looking up but 15 years of scorched earth won't be fixed overnight. Unfortunately the TV ratings are still poor and that won't change anytime soon with the brilliant 10 year contract signed under the former regime.

    4. Brett not sure why you wonder what he said in his quote. "''I would like to jump in a time machine, go back to 1995, and tell the owners and Tony George not to split,'' Franchitti said. ''As soon as my time machine is done, I know where I'm going.''"

      Pretty clear, he would love to go back and tell TG and the team owners not to split.

      I am not sure there is anyone who wanted the split, and I don't think there is anyone who would not like to go back and prevent the split. But, as has been discussed ad nauseum, without the split carts management by team owners would have run all of ow racing into bankruptcy. If cart had such a wonderful product, then losing IMS would not have forced it into bankruptcy. If NASCAR lost Daytona or Charlotte, it would not fail like cart did.

      So you predicted that cart would go into bankruptcy and cease to exist while Indycar would continue on? I missed that prediction.
