DINING: Three Pints a quart low on customer service

Dining - A&E

I have issues. I readily admit that—and I have a T-shirt that proclaims it to the world (or at least the sliver of the world I encounter when it comes up in my weekend leisure-wear rotation). I may be a hot mess, but I know that not everyone shares my neuroses, so I try not to let them influence my restaurant reviews.

But sometimes, those peeves can’t help but influence the experience. For instance, when I met a friend for a Sunday lunch at Three Pints Brewpub (5020 Cambridge Way, Plainfield; 839-1000), we were led through the completely empty restaurant to a table directly across from where an employee was sitting, passing the time. To make matters worse, other workers gathered there to chat and then pose for photos at the bar.

Is it too much to ask that restaurant staff care at least a bit for the comfort of the patrons?

Even so, we took a few deep breaths and tried to ignore the irritation to focus on the food. The quality of our appetizer, the Maryland Blue Crab Cakes ($8.99), helped.

Billed as the house specialty, the two hand-shaped patties arrived still steaming and literally bursting with crab meat. Sure, there were spices and presumably something that held everything together, but the crab was by far the star of the dish—as it should be. The cake was delicious by itself and, dipped in the spicy remoulade sauce, it went a long way toward improving our moods.

The sandwich selection is pretty standard, with a few exceptions like biscuit-battered catfish, beer brats and pot roast on a bun. We opted for one old standby—with a twist—and one less-common choice.

Dining “Tobacco onions” top the smoky pulled pork sandwich. (IBJ Photo/ Perry Reichanadter)

At Three Pints, the Hickory Smoked Pulled Pork ($7.99) comes topped with “tobacco onions,” a new term for both of us (which I misread as Tabasco onions, perhaps because our server warned us they were spicy). Near as we could tell, they’re onion rings breaded with flour and spices before being fried. The result is a crumbly coating that an Internet search tells me is supposed to look like shredded tobacco. Looked and

tasted like onion rings to us. But they were a nice complement to the smoky pork and sweet barbecue sauce—as were the beer-battered jalapeno slices my friend added to her sandwich. The sweet potato fries she chose as her side dish were another solid offering.

I tried the Beer Brats ($6.99), which are marinated in Three Pints’ own ale (the brewpub is making its own beer, but couldn’t sell it yet during our visit) and grilled before being topped with caramelized onions and sauerkraut, all of which was nestled in a fresh-baked bun. I missed the ale-mustard option on the menu, or I would have had that, too. The sausage was excellent, offering the expected snap when I bit into it, and the oversized bun was even better. Y-U-M. I had beer-battered onion rings as my side, and they were good enough to order again.

Our plans for a liquid dessert were thwarted by the lack of house brew, so we left that for another time—when I’ll be sure to ask for a table as far away from the break area as possible.•

  • Must be good!
I haven't had the opportunity to make it to the Brew Pub yet but I am curious about how, in the evenings during the week, there is an overflow of cars in the parking lot. THe place is always wall to wall cars which means they are doing something right.
  • Possibly just bad luck
I live just about a mile away from Three Pints, so I frequent the place out of convenience. After just a few visits, the employees and I got to know each other and I feel like family every time I go there now. The first couple times I went, they were still trying to find some good, reliable staff members and having issues with a few employees, so perhaps that was just a mishap due to poor training (or hiring). In the months since I first visited, it seems that they get better every time I go. The food is excellent, and their house brews range from good to phenomenal (try the Yoshi's Nectar!). You should give them another shot. Also, any time I've had any issues with service or my food, they've been happy and eager to do all they can to solve the problem once I mentioned it!

    Good review!

  1. Uh, sorry Johnnie, but you are incorrect. Despite the assertions by yourself and various defenders and captains, sports attendance is NOT off significantly at most sporting events in the US. Variances in attendance has been in the range of single digits, both + & - for years now. MLB has had most of its best overall attendance nubers in the last decade, and that trend has been consistent for most major sporting events. The number one issue cited by most fans when asked about attendance is the overall cost of attending. The presence of HD and big screen televisions in home doesn't even register, as a factor for not attending an event. VALUE in the product is the key, and apparently is something lacking in the current ICS. What other explanation is there when with what is routinely touted as the "best" racing on the planet, fans are staying away in DROVES. A "close" title battle into the last event at Fontana, with the "cars and stars" of the ICS, and who showed up? MAYBE 8K. Sorry, but HD TV isn't to blame for that kind of fan apathy.

  3. If she was worth the $ the public outcry over direct tv dropping them would have kept them on their dishes as we have seen with other companies. I too quit watching channel 13 after she showed up since I left channel 8 because of her all show rather than production results. When Randy on 8 corrected her she had a big head and incorrectly challenged his correction for pronunciation of a city. Other antics while she matures was too much for me with her very inaccurate forecasts. All the forecasters were predicting rain until Thursday except Chris. They predicted sunny on Thursday but instead of rain until Thursday upon which the sun would finally make it out in full glory Chris was right on the money just as I too predicted looking at the radar on weather.gov. One thing I love about Angela is the fear you can see in her every time it thunders in the winter. It far exceeds the entertainment value of her body language (high heel noise drags, depression, etc) when her forecasts are so incorrect. Her hair stands on end, you have to see it!!!
