Peabody Indiana Services LLC has notified the Indiana Department of Workforce Development that it will close its Farmersburg surface mine operations in Vigo and Sullivan counties  in southwestern Indiana, affecting employment for 100 workers at the mine.

The division of St. Louis-based coal company Peabody Energy said it expects the mine south of Terre Haute to close between Aug. 30 and Sept. 13. The company expects most of the workers to move to its Bear Run Mine in nearby Sullivan County.

Bear Run began production in May and will be the largest surface mine in the Eastern United States, with a capacity of 8 million tons of coal a year.

Peabody operates nearly 30 surface and underground mines worldwide, including eight in Indiana. An underground mine also exists in Francisco, which is about 30 miles north of Evansville.
