A man convicted of scheming to steal as much as $27 million set aside to maintain the graves of people who had paid in advance for their funerals has been sentenced to three years in prison.

Mark Singer was sentenced Wednesday in a Marion County court. A jury convicted him of five counts of theft in December.

Singer advised the owners of Indianapolis-based Ansure Mortuaries, formerly known as Memorial Gardens, as they stole millions of dollars from the company trust fund. The company owned cemeteries in several states.

Singer still faces charges in Tennessee. He is a former officer with investment firm Smith Barney, a former branch of Citigroup Global Markets. New York-based Citigroup Inc. agreed to pay Indiana $717,000 for not properly supervising Singer, the state's Securities Division announced in November.

Singer worked with Robert Nelms, who has also been sentenced to prison time over his involvement in the case.
