Cable manufacturer Belden Inc. announced on Thursday that it plans to add 40 jobs in Carmel by 2014 as part of a $3.1 million expansion.

The St. Louis-based company said the investment will go toward leasing and equipping a new 30,000-square-foot facility in the Hamilton County suburb, where its Americas division is headquartered.

Belden has 39 employees in Carmel and plans to begin hiring additional workers for human resources, finance and customer-support positions by the end of the year.

The Indiana Economic Development Corp. said it will provide Belden up to $750,000 in performance-based tax credits based on the company’s job-creation plans. The city of Carmel will consider additional property-tax abatement.

Belden has 50 offices and 6,600 employees globally. Its Americas division in Carmel accounted for more than half of the company’s 2010 revenue of $1.7 billion.
