As a subscriber you can listen to articles at work, in the car, or while you work out. Subscribe NowSteve Bray, who started at WISH-TV Channel 8 as a weatherman in 1995, has been promoted to news director, the Indianapolis CBS-TV affiliate announced Tuesday afternoon.
Bray, who was named news operations manager in April 2009, has served as interim news director since September following the ouster of former news director Patti McGettigan in August.
“Steve’s varied and experienced background in news and weather … makes him the ideal candidate to lead our news department,” said Jeff White, president and general manager of WISH-TV, in a prepared statement. “Steve has made a tremendous positive impact in every one of his many roles at WISH-TV. I look forward to this success continuing as news director.”
Bray won three Emmy awards this year, including for his coverage of the Indiana State Fair stage collapse in August 2011.
Prior to arriving at WISH-TV, Bray worked at Fox affiliate WALA-TV in Mobile, Ala.; and NBC affiliate KPLC-TV in Lake Charles, La. He began his career at NBC affiliate WAND-TV in Decatur, Ill., after earning a degree in meteorology in 1985 from Northern Illinois University.
WISH-TV had been one of three television stations in Indianapolis operating without a news director. WRTV-TV Channel 8 and WTHR-TV Channel 13 still have vacancies.
WXIN-TV Channel 59 was the lone local station with an established news director. Lee Rosenthal joined the Fox affiliate in January 2009.
