Hinckley, who was superintendent of the Warren Township schools for 11 years until 2012, will start at IPS on March 4. Hinckley will remain interim superintendent until the IPS board hires a permanent replacement for White.
White announced in January that he would step down April 5. He termed his departure a “retirement,” but the IPS board agreed to buy out his contract in exchange for his exit, and he has since expressed interest in superintendent jobs in other states.
Three new members were elected to the IPS board in November, all of whom expressed some level of disagreement with White's leadership of the district, which has about 30,000 students. A statement issued by IPS said White will assist with any transitional issues and then go on administrative leave.
“We are fortunate to have someone with Dr. Hinckley’s experience accept this responsibility. We look forward to working with her while proceeding with the search and hiring of a new superintendent,” IPS Board President Diane Arnold said in a prepared statement.
Before joining Warren Township schools, Hinckley served as superintendent of LaPorte Community School Corp. from 1989 to 2001 and of Hobart Township Schools from 1984 to 1989.
After retiring from Warren Township, Hinckley started an education consulting business.
Hinckley, 60, holds a master’s degree from Indiana University, a master’s degree from Purdue University, and a doctorate in education from Loyola University of Chicago.
