The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra has gone South to fill its open position for vice president and general manager.
Daniel Beckley, the 34-year-old former executive director of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, will assume the role on Aug. 12, the ISO announced Friday. Beckley fills the position vacated in February by Thomas Ramsey, who retired after 29 years with the ISO.
Beckley brings a varied resume with experience as a professional musician and an executive in the private sector. He graduated from James Madison University and Northwestern University with both a bachelor's and master's degree in music. As a bass trombonist, he has performed with several regional orchestras across the United States.
He also served as president of BlueKey Web Solutions, a Charleston, S.C.-based Web design firm, during a 2005-2010 tenure with the company.
With the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, Beckley oversaw all the artistic, education and business activities of the group. Under his leadership, the organization achieved significant growth in its subscription and donor base, recorded budget surpluses in consecutive years, and launched a successful Chamber Orchestra series, according to the ISO.
With the ISO, Beckley will have overall responsibility for the orchestra and the Hilbert Circle Theatre, including concert planning and logistics, productions, contracts, and budgets.
“This role will be instrumental in helping to shape and execute the ISO’s future plans, and I am confident that we’ve found the right person in Danny," said Gary Ginstling, CEO of the orchestra.
When Ginstling arrived at the ISO in February, he faced three open upper-management positions on the executive team. Beckley is his second major hire. Holly C. Johnson joined the ISO as vice president of development this month.
The orchestra still is searching for a vice president of finance. Indiana Repertory Theatre CFO Suzanne Sweeney agreed to take the position earlier this year, but instead opted to stay with the IRT and become its managing director and chief operating officer.
