WTHR-TV Channel 13 is luring popular meteorologist Angela Buchman away from competitor WISH-TV Channel 8, according to several local broadcast television sources.

Buchman’s contract at WISH reportedly expires this summer. A non-compete clause likely would keep her from appearing on-air for another station in the Indianapolis market for one year from the date of the contract’s expiration

Reached by phone on Wednesday, John Cardenas, WTHR’s vice president and general manager, declined to comment on Buchman’s pending arrival.

WISH General Manager Jeff White did not return calls seeking comment.

What’s unclear is whether current WTHR lead meteorologist Chris Wright will remain at the station. Wright also came to WTHR from WISH, in September 1999.

Wright was honored earlier this month at the regional Emmys in Indianapolis, winning the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences' Silver Circle Award for at least 25 years of significant contributions to television.

Buchman, meanwhile, has earned two Emmys from the academy for “best weathercaster.”

The popular weatherwoman is an Indianapolis-area native who returned from a four-year stint at a Sacramento, Calif., station to join WISH in 2001.

Her meteorology career began at the National Weather Service before she moved to television, starting at WLFI in West Lafayette.

She graduated from Hamilton Southeastern High School in Fishers and earned a bachelor’s degree in atmospheric science from Purdue University.
