Market District opening Oct. 7 in Carmel

The state’s first Giant Eagle Inc.-owned grocery store is set to open Oct. 7 in Carmel.

The 125,000-square-foot Market District is located at 11505 N. Illinois St. within the $100 million development called The Bridges that already features a CVS Pharmacy and retail building on the north side of the property.

Market District is the Pittsburgh-based food retailer’s specialty-grocery arm.

The Carmel store will offer fresh produce, seafood and meat, domestic and imported cheeses, health and beauty products, bulk foods, a pharmacy, houseware goods, a bakery and sweets shop. More than 100 organic fruits and vegetables, along with thousands of other organic products, will be available.

The bakery will have a variety of cupcakes, fruit tarts, cookies, pies, muffins and cakes. The bread selection will include artisan, whole grain, French baguettes and housemade jalapeno cheddar and cinnamon swirl.

In addition to the bakery, the store will have a sweets shop, which the company describes as “a chocolate lover’s dream,” featuring a selection of hand-dipped chocolate novelties, fudge, roasted nuts, gourmet popcorn, cotton candy and gelato.

A full-service dining option called “table by Market District” will also be open daily for lunch and dinner and for brunch from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Sundays. A bar will offer 18 craft beers on tap, bottled beer, wine and specialty cocktails.

Indianapolis native Marc Summers, who hosts “Unwrapped” and is the executive producer of “Restaurant Impossible” on the Food Network, will be at the grand opening signing autographs and participating in a trivia game show with prizes.

The related GetGo convenience store and gas station will also open Oct. 7, offering quick-service food options for customers including subs, burgers, wraps, flatbreads and smoothies.

Giant Eagle is hiring 500 employees for the new store. The company has 13 existing Market District stores in Pennsylvania and Ohio.
