Indiana House OKs bill to ban texting while driving

Indiana drivers would not be allowed to send or read text messages on mobile phones under legislation that's cleared the Indiana House.

The Republican-controlled House voted 85-11 Tuesday for the bill extending the state's current texting ban for drivers younger than 18 to drivers of all ages. The bill would also ban people from reading or sending e-mails on their phones while operating a moving vehicle, although hands-free technology would be allowed. The penalty would be up to $500.

Opponents questioned how police would determine whether someone was texting or simply dialing a phone number. Others fear a texting ban is a first step to an outright ban on mobile phone use in cars.

Supporters said the ban would prevent distracted driving and could save lives.

The bill moves to the GOP-led Senate for consideration.
