Nicole Pence, who abruptly left WTHR-TV Channel 13 late last year, has been hired by WXIN-TV Channel 59 to anchor the station’s new 11 p.m. newscast, the station announced Monday afternoon.

Pence, a niece of Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, was described as a rising star at WTHR before she left in November. WTHR gave no explanation for the departure, but TV news insider website NewsBlues reported that Pence “was fired.”

Pence will anchor a newscast Fox is calling, “Fox59 NewsPoint at 11.” It is scheduled to premiere June 30.

Fox59 also plans to roll out a 7 p.m. newscast in the fall co-anchored by 13-year station veteran Bob Donaldson and Fanchon Stinger, who joined the station in 2010 after spending 11 years as a reporter and anchor in Detroit. An exact date for the premiere wasn’t disclosed.

Both the 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts will be a half-hour long.

"Over the past several years, Fox59 News has seen tremendous growth in terms of news hours and viewers,” said Paul Rennie, president of Fox59 and sister station WTTV Channel 4. “The addition of the “Fox59 News at 7” and “NewsPoint” at 11pm is the next logical step in our expansion. We’re excited to bring viewers in central Indiana more options to watch news when and how they want it."

Pence, a Columbus native and DePauw University graduate, joined WTHR in spring 2012 at age 29. She previously was morning co-anchor at WLEX-TV in Lexington, Ky.

  • More news?!
Fox already has news from 4-7p and then again at 10-11p. Is there really that much to talk about in Indy and/or Indiana? There has to be a varied format, otherwise this whole thing will tank. People can only stand so much of the same weather forecase and daily shootings before they change the channel.
  • format?
Curious as to the format of "Newspoint"
  • great news!
This is great news, no pun intended. Nicole was and is a good anchor. I was disappointed to see that WTHR had let her go. Fox could definitely use the help.
  • From News to "news"
Reporter leaves a news station under questionable circumstances, a niece of a Republican governor, and gets hired at Fox. Wow. Shocker.
    • Ugh
      Say it isn't so......
