Susan Brooks announced she will challenge Burton in the May 2012 Republican primary to represent Indiana's 5th District. She joins challenger John McGoff in the race, which former Rep. David McIntosh also has said he might enter.
"I think that after the last race two-thirds of the (Republican primary) voters did not vote for the incumbent, I think they're interested in finding new leadership," Brooks said Tuesday.
Burton first won election in 1982 to represent the district covering much of central Indiana. But he narrowly won GOP primaries in 2008 and 2010 and Statehouse Republicans redrew his district this year to exclude many of the areas that went heavily for him in those races.
Brooks was the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Indiana in 2001-2007 and was a deputy mayor under former Indianapolis Mayor Steve Goldsmith before then. If she wins the seat she would leave her job as vice president and general counsel for Ivy Tech Community College.
Former Indiana Republican Party Chairman Murray Clark is co-chairing Brooks' campaign.
