The 15-year contract reached under IPL’s Renewable Energy Production Program is subject to approval from the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission.
Minnesota-based Sunrise plans to generate the power at three, 10-megawatt sites in IPL’s service territory.
IBJ reported July 9 that IPL, starting next March, will stop offering to write new contracts to buy from customers power generated from renewable sources. IPL will continue buying power for several years under terms of REP contracts reached before the program’s discontinuation.
Renewable-energy advocates praised IPL’s REP program for its potential to create jobs and to get away from the rising costs of coal-powered generation.
But the utility said renewable power today costs more than conventional generation and that it was concerned about effects on ratepayers.
Another project under the REP program is a solar farm being built at Indianapolis International Airport that could produce up to 80 megawatts by the end of next year.
