Cardinal Fitness closed six Indianapolis-area locations on Tuesday but will keep another six open.

The health-club chain closed its locations in Broad Ripple, Geist, Greenwood and Southport, as well as its locations on Michigan Road and Pendleton Pike, according to Jenny Challand, the receptionist at the Cardinal Fitness center on West 10th Street, which is staying open.

Cardinal’s other remaining Indianapolis-area locations are on East Washington Street and on Eagle Highlands Way on the west side, as well as in Avon, Fishers and Noblesville.

A letter posted by Cardinal Fitness said "operating expenses, marketing costs, and an incredible amount of new competition has increased to the point that competing is no longer possible" at the locations it is closing.

LA Fitness is allowing Cardinal customers to use their memberships at LA Fitness’ eight Indianapolis-area locations, according to LA Fitness personnel at its Glendale location.

The fitness center landscape has become increasingly competitive in recent years.

In 2007, several national fitness chains targeted Indianapolis for major expansions, including Lifestyle Family Fitness, Gold's Gym, Life Time Fitness and LA Fitness.
