DINING: Mass Ave diners finally have opportunity to study Pizzology

Dining - A&E

Growing up at the Jersey shore, there was no –ology to pizza. It was tossed-in-the-air dough, tomato sauce and cheese, baked to a bubbly goodness.

Toppings? Sure, but not mandatory. Since those innocent times, though, I’ve been exposed to a wide range of pizza extrapolations—some good, some great, some unnecessary and some that created a period of post-ordering/pre-eating confusion as to what the thing might actually taste like.

With a name like Pizzology (608 Mass Ave, 317-3173), it would be reasonable to expect that last experience—especially when its range of ingredients includes pancetta, mortadella, goat cheese, porchetta, artichokes, etc. And having not visited the north-side location, I assumed the Mass Ave spot would have a frou-frou vibe.

Yet the airy atmosphere and friendly service, combined with relatively simplistic combinations built from largely farm-fresh ingredients, helps keep the place from being intimidating. Remember Aesop’s Tables? That former resident of this space always seemed dark and uninviting despite years of good Middle Eastern fare. Thanks to large windows on two sides and an open area for the pizza oven, Pizzology appears to be putting everything out in full view, creating a welcoming environment.

Also welcoming is a $10 lunch special that lets you pair a personal pizza—here called a Pizzetta Persona—and either a small (but not too small) Chop Salad (successfully combining romaine, prosciutto, gorgonzola, tomato, olives, shallots and citronette dressing) or a cup of soup, plus a fountain soda or fresh-brewed iced tea. That’s a tough price point to beat even at a chain pizza shop. If the choice of a basic Rossa or Bianca Pie with fresh mozzarella isn’t enough for you, toppings can be added at a $1, $1.50 or $2 level. I was happy with the simple (and delicious) version.

You can get more adventurous, of course, with such combinations as the Fresca Ardente, which includes goat cheese, pancetta, fresh mint and sea salt, or the Asparagi with, of course, roasted asparagus, fresh and smoked mozzarella, and prosciutto, but experimentation isn’t mandatory.

A slightly confusing additional lunch option—and one that I suspect won’t last long—is the Piebar, which offers the same deal, only you head up to a display area yourself and pick out an already-made variation. Not only does this create awkward foot traffic, but it also led me, on another visit, to pick up a cold pizza.

Don’t pass on Pizzology just because everyone in your party isn’t in a pizza mood. The Spicy Cappellini ($8)—with garlic, shallots and fresh basil—proved a winning alternative, as was the easy-on-the-chili Indiana Sweet Corn, Pancetta & Jalapeno Risotto ($8) appetizer.

For dessert, lightly baked Zeppole ($5) broke down the dough into bite-size nuggets, sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar and dominated—in a good way—by honey. House-made tiramisu and gelato selections are also available.•

  • Neapolitan style pizza
Going to a place that serves Neapolitan style pizza from a wood fired oven and complaining that you don't like it because the crust was "burnt" is like going to a sushi restaurant and complaining that they served raw fish.
  • why
I noted it because the space now has a very different feel from the street.
  • response
I think that is probably for your readers to decide. Why mention it at all? I like what you do Lou, just didn't like that.
    • low blow?
"That former resident of this space always seemed dark and uninviting despite years of good Middle Eastern fare" hardly seems a low blow or denigrating. (And I still miss the Aesop's Chicken when the restaurant had a spot at City Market.) Thanks for reading.
      • wrong
I've not eaten at Pizzology so can't comment on that, but I've eaten at Aesop's Tables many, many times and always found the food to be very good and the ambience very friendly. I think it was a low blow and beneath you to denigrate an establishment that anchored the Mass Avenue corridor for many years, esp. during the hard times.
        • No Thanks, Pizzology
I have tried Pizzology in Carmel twice. Both times, my pizza crust was burnt, resulting in the taste of burnt crust overpowering any other flavor the pizza may have had. Foodies will tell you its one of the best pizzas they have ever eaten. I disagree completely. Burnt pizza with fresh and/or interesting ingredients does not equal artistic gourmet pizza. It just means they serve burnt pizza. No thanks Pizzology. I will not waste my time or money there ever again.

        1. Uh, sorry Johnnie, but you are incorrect. Despite the assertions by yourself and various defenders and captains, sports attendance is NOT off significantly at most sporting events in the US. Variances in attendance has been in the range of single digits, both + & - for years now. MLB has had most of its best overall attendance nubers in the last decade, and that trend has been consistent for most major sporting events. The number one issue cited by most fans when asked about attendance is the overall cost of attending. The presence of HD and big screen televisions in home doesn't even register, as a factor for not attending an event. VALUE in the product is the key, and apparently is something lacking in the current ICS. What other explanation is there when with what is routinely touted as the "best" racing on the planet, fans are staying away in DROVES. A "close" title battle into the last event at Fontana, with the "cars and stars" of the ICS, and who showed up? MAYBE 8K. Sorry, but HD TV isn't to blame for that kind of fan apathy.

        3. If she was worth the $ the public outcry over direct tv dropping them would have kept them on their dishes as we have seen with other companies. I too quit watching channel 13 after she showed up since I left channel 8 because of her all show rather than production results. When Randy on 8 corrected her she had a big head and incorrectly challenged his correction for pronunciation of a city. Other antics while she matures was too much for me with her very inaccurate forecasts. All the forecasters were predicting rain until Thursday except Chris. They predicted sunny on Thursday but instead of rain until Thursday upon which the sun would finally make it out in full glory Chris was right on the money just as I too predicted looking at the radar on weather.gov. One thing I love about Angela is the fear you can see in her every time it thunders in the winter. It far exceeds the entertainment value of her body language (high heel noise drags, depression, etc) when her forecasts are so incorrect. Her hair stands on end, you have to see it!!!
