Indiana coal industry battling EPA plant limits

Back to TopCommentsE-mailPrintBookmark and Share

Members of Indiana's coal industry and business community are heading to Chicago this week to fight against new limits on coal-fired plants they say would cost hundreds of jobs across the state.

The Environmental Protection Agency is considering cutting carbon dioxide emissions from existing power plants as a measure to combat global warming. Opponents of the effort say more regulations will wreak havoc on the economy without having any meaningful impact on climate change, but environmentalists supporting the new limits say a burgeoning renewable energy industry would more than make up for any lost jobs.

If the EPA moves forward with the new set of regulations next year, existing coal-fired plants would have to find a way to limit carbon-dioxide emissions. Bruce Stevens, vice president of the Indiana Coal Council, said it would most likely force plants to consider using unproven technology to reduce emissions.

Carbon capture and sequestration mechanisms have been worked on for years, but none are commercially viable yet, he said. The end result would be a massive loss in jobs and increase in utility bills, Stevens said.

"I think there is a very real danger they will move forward with this," Stevens said Wednesday of the EPA.

The EPA is holding "public listening sessions" for now and has not yet started the lengthy process needed to create a new federal regulation. But the question weighs heavy on Indiana, which is a major coal producer and gets more than 80 percent of its electricity from coal.

Environmental groups supporting the new limits note it is too early to say exactly what any federal rule would look like, because it hasn't been formally drafted yet.

Jesse Kharbanda, executive director of the Hoosier Environmental Council, said there are a range of options available for reducing emissions.

He added that any loss in coal industry jobs could easily be offset by the creation of jobs building clean-energy components.

"The absolute issue is to think about the net impact on jobs in Indiana, otherwise we're presenting a distorted analysis," Kharbanda said.

  • What is wrong with you?
Mr. Burton, I will throw the question back at you. What is wrong with you? At a time my health insurance costs have quadrupled, and not because of anything related to the air we breathe, and just about everything other expense has seen double digit, if not triple digit growth in expenses, why do you think it is ok to make energy EVEN MORE EXPENSIVE? In the last five years, I have watched most of my utility bills double and the proposed changes could quadruple the already doubled electricity bills. What universe do you live in with an unlimited income? If you want to pay more for electricity, please feel free to send them extra but please don't force me to pay more.
  • We All Breathe Same Air
What is the matter which these people. Do they breathe different air from the rest of us. I for one would gladly pay more for electricity to get cleaner air, even if that included a cost to help the poor who cannot afford higher rates. Most people with whom I have discussed this issue of clean air vs higher rates would gladly pay for cleaner air.
    • Really now...
"Bruce Stevens, vice president of the Indiana Coal Council, said it would most likely force plants to consider using unproven technology to reduce emissions._..._ Carbon capture and sequestration mechanisms have been worked on for years, but none are commercially viable yet, he said." --- Really now? When Indiana legislature was considering what to include as "renewable sources" in their tax credit legislation, I remember seeing a whole bunch of TV ads praising Clean Coal. The coal industry was saying that clean coal was a sure thing, worthy of credits. So, what happened? Other than you are getting paid to say whatever dung they ask you to spread?

    5. Problem: most of the people responding to this article don't know about this service AT ALL! Why? Lack of awareness. This isn't IndyGo. This is CIRTA: might as well be the mattress company because they are asleep at the wheel - something like 3 directors over the last year? Playing with federal grant money is great! This "region" wants commuter rail service, has spent MILLIONS on Transportation studies yet can't even support a commuter bus line? This is largely for suburban riders to get to downtown - not for "service people to work in our hotels and restaurants" ! Get your head out of your backside!! These are professionals, students etc. that don't want to fight traffic, save some money on parking, gas, stress.... if CIRTA would put their federal money into widely promoting the sevive to Greenwood, Fishers & Carmel instead of finding directors and studies - this would be a successful service. Our family uses(d) it daily for the last several years - but the recent uncertainty & now unreliability due to cuts from Carmel has been a problem. Now, costs us an additional $350/month for gas & parking ( $4200/year) plus vehicle wear, service, environmental impact ... YES - this REGION needs this this type of service in order to keep growing and getting the people it needs to fill skilled positions in downtown Indianapolis. Think outside of your own car !!!
