Sculpture headed back atop Indianapolis monument

A 38-foot-tall bronze sculpture will soon be back atop the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in downtown Indianapolis.

State officials say the 117-year-old Victory sculpture of a woman with a torch in one hand and a sword in the other will return to Monument Circle on Friday, a little more than four months after it was taken down for repairs.

The sculpture will be on street-level display until Sept. 6, when crews plan to use a crane to lift the 10-ton sculpture back to the top of the monument.

State Department of Administration Commissioner Robert Wynkoop says the sculpture and carved limestone eagles below the monument's observation deck are in better-than-new condition. He says he expects the repairs will keep them in good condition for the next 100 years.
