WISH meteorologist Buchman leaving for rival WTHR

WTHR-TV Channel 13 is luring popular meteorologist Angela Buchman away from competitor WISH-TV Channel 8, according to several local broadcast television sources.

Buchman’s contract at WISH reportedly expires this summer. A non-compete clause likely would keep her from appearing on-air for another station in the Indianapolis market for one year from the date of the contract’s expiration

Reached by phone on Wednesday, John Cardenas, WTHR’s vice president and general manager, declined to comment on Buchman’s pending arrival.

WISH General Manager Jeff White did not return calls seeking comment.

What’s unclear is whether current WTHR lead meteorologist Chris Wright will remain at the station. Wright also came to WTHR from WISH, in September 1999.

Wright was honored earlier this month at the regional Emmys in Indianapolis, winning the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences' Silver Circle Award for at least 25 years of significant contributions to television.

Buchman, meanwhile, has earned two Emmys from the academy for “best weathercaster.”

The popular weatherwoman is an Indianapolis-area native who returned from a four-year stint at a Sacramento, Calif., station to join WISH in 2001.

Her meteorology career began at the National Weather Service before she moved to television, starting at WLFI in West Lafayette.

She graduated from Hamilton Southeastern High School in Fishers and earned a bachelor’s degree in atmospheric science from Purdue University.

  • More to Wright Leaving
There's got to be more to Chris Wright leaving Channel 13 than they said on the news, Leaving to pursue other interests. Sounds like he was boxed into a corner.
  • Channel 13 Weather
I quit watching channel 13, because Chris Wright always made so much drama out of the weather. I started watching 8, because Angela doesn't dramatize, she is the best I've seen, and since she went off the air, I hardly watch any news or weather. If Chris Wright stays at 13, maybe they can put him on at 1 a.m.
  • dont go alone
bye angela. please take karen and have julie show the way.
  • Kevin Gregory
Kevin Gregory hes good at presenting the weather and has good personality, but you compare his forecast to the NWS forecast and it always matches, weatherwise, temps and percentages of rain. Everytime.
  • All for the money
I read she going to make 400,000 thousand a year to say " it might snow, it might rain" all weather people have been inaccurate over last couple years. Hmmmmm. Think she is beautiful, but won't watch WTHR just cuz she on it. Just saying.
  • What????
You can't imagine? I guess not!
  • Poise, beauty, communication the best
As someone who has observed TV markets all over the state: Terre Haute, Evansville, New Albany (Louisville), Logansport (Lafayette, Chicago) and someone with a degree in radio-TV and with some personal experience in communicztion disciplines I rate Angela one of the best and overall the best I have seen if you rate her on accuracy, knowledge, poise, personal appearance and style-womanly beauty, etc. In truth I see her in big market TV if she wants to go for the Big Time. She has what it takes.
  • just looking
I don't think they are the only station that holds back news so people will tune in. I do not care for the practice either, but I bet other stations just might do the same thing (wink wink). Angela is a beautiful woman. Though I am married, I can still make observations about Art, Engineering marvels, and women
  • Channel 13 scare tactics
I don't ever watch channel 13. Have you ever noticed how Stehr, Moorehead, and Wright use scare tactics in their "trailers" about the upcoming news and weather? You'd think there are mass riots in the streets and an astroid is on its way to strike the earth! Of course, you need to tune in at 11 for details!! When you do, it was all overexaggerated hype. I'm tired of their "cheesy" tactics and have no doubt that Buchmann will be trained to do this as well.
    • "Not Surprised" ......
Not Surprised has some of it nailed. There are some members of WISH's "management" that make the Titanic seem like a well-run operation.
    • You'd be surprised
...how close to the mark you are on bonuses for saying "track". You might not get an actual bonus for saying track all the time, but it's what the "management" wants. Yay for Magid buzzwords !
    • She's lucky to leave
With the shabby way that WISH treats loyal, long-time employees I can't say I'm surprised by this move. She will be a lot happier being out of WISH.
    • Chris Wright
I like Chris Wright. Yeah, he sometimes has problems with the Brain Game questions, but less so than Bob Gregory.
    • Wright???
I prefer to call him Chris Wrong.
    • New news
I too will be switching my viewership from WISH-TV to WTHR.
      • Angela Buchman Leaving
Chris Wright is good with the weather. At least he has learned not to interrupt Jeopardy. He has a lot of trouble reading the questions on Brain Game, though.
        • Right To Work
Suddenly I see one person who is really excited about the new Right To Work Law in Indiana. I am sure the lawyers are pouring over her "non-compete agreement" but I think she now has a claim to seek work in her chosen field of work, and the non-compete may become moot.
She seems like one of the nicest ,coolest ladies that I have seen in a long time. Good luck Angela! Thanks for being wonderful.
        • Weather Reporting
What's the big deal and getting an award for best weather rporting. They all have the same technology and equipment. So let her go, I get my weather on the internet or cell phone...Can't imagine why this is such big news.
          • Like
In truth, the whole forecast thing is rather superfluous nowdays, when people have access to multiple forecasts (including NWS, AccuWeather etc) online instantly, and WISH has a seperate weather channel with the forecast cycling through every 5-6 minutes. Tv stations are looking for likeable weathercasters, not great meteorologists.
          • A Great Change
So much to say about Mr. Wright, but for now I will just say this will be the Wright replacement for Chris. Great Move!!!

          • G R
Gene Rodriguez seemed to suddenly disappear from WISH-tv. She seemed much more watchable/listenable than Ms. Buchman.
          • How does Jeff White still have a job?
Seems to me that the only person that would benefit WISH-TV by leaving would be their GM Jeff White...bumbling, aloof, and reactionary does not a General Manager make obvious by his handling of gloating over firing Brad Edwards, then lying about Joy Dumandan even though he fawned over her weeks prior in public. Now he looses their #1 attraction to the competitor's station and he didn't even know about it and is hiding in his office.

Sad to learn information about the news station you're supposed to be running from another source. Classic really if you think about it.
            • I miss you too!
Thanks for the kind words Jimmer!
            • wish staff
Buchman was destined for higher sights. Seems Wish is a trainging ground for other stations. What happened to Joy Dumanden? One day there, next we have a new face. Anyone know?
              • Future with WX Bug?
Sweet Angela could be the lead meterologist with the Weather Bug. It will make my pre-running routine feel more complete since the loss of Raddie!!!!!
                • Channel 6 still afraid of Bob Gregory
Ch. 6 is so scared of Bob Gregory that when Kevin wanted to wish his dad a happy birthday the other night, he wasn't allowed to say his name ON CH. 6'S AIR!!! Sheesh, how cowardly!
                • Won't be going to 13!
Sorry, but AB is NOT that great a weathercaster. 13 has the BEST weather team, BUILT by Chris Wright. This is merely a 'feeler' ploy by AB to see if she can be 'unloaded' to 13. Both 6 and 8 treated their lead weathercasters (Bob McLain and Stan Wood, respectively) VERY disrespectfully when it was time for their to retire. Neither station has recovered from it. Bob Gregory is 'the' classy ace that Chris Wright has up his sleeve at 13. Also, 13 already has an eye for beauty, with the women forecasters in their ranks. CW makes AB look like a 'little girl' who hasn't finished her milk. Nope. 13 has the winning weather team. 8 messed up bigtime by letting him get away years ago. WTHR--the TV station that has weather for grownups!
                • 6
Kevin gregory is much better than Angela or Chris Wright. Hard to listen to Angela use the word track or tracking as many times as possible every 60 seconds. Maybe that's why she talks so fast, she gets an extra $10 for each use of the word "track".
                  • Goddess
IBJ says Buchman is a "popular weatherwoman" and “best weathercaster.” I just say she is a goddess. Let the warm front arrive soon.

                  • Angela
This isn't news...the iPad, iPhone, etc. have made the weatherperson irrelevant...who even "watches" news any more...get your life back folks - buy a smartphone!
                  • Angela
Buchman had the best accuracy in the Indianapolis area at 22% - she will be missed!

                  1. President Obama has referred to the ACA as "Obamacare" any number of times; one thing it is not, if you don't qualify for a subsidy, is "affordable".

                  2. One important correction, Indiana does not have an ag-gag law, it was soundly defeated, or at least changed. It was stripped of everything to do with undercover pictures and video on farms. There is NO WAY on earth that ag gag laws will survive a constitutional challenge. None. Period. Also, the reason they are trying to keep you out, isn't so we don't show the blatant abuse like slamming pigs heads into the ground, it's show we don't show you the legal stuf... the anal electroctions, the cutting off of genitals without anesthesia, the tail docking, the cutting off of beaks, the baby male chicks getting thrown alive into a grinder, the deplorable conditions, downed animals, animals sitting in their own excrement, the throat slitting, the bolt guns. It is all deplorable behavior that doesn't belong in a civilized society. The meat, dairy and egg industries are running scared right now, which is why they are trying to pass these ridiculous laws. What a losing battle.

                  3. Eating there years ago the food was decent, nothing to write home about. Weird thing was Javier tried to pass off the story the way he ended up in Indy was he took a bus he thought was going to Minneapolis. This seems to be the same story from the founder of Acapulco Joe's. Stopped going as I never really did trust him after that or the quality of what being served.

                  4. Indianapolis...the city of cricket, chains, crime and call centers!

                  5. "In real life, a farmer wants his livestock as happy and health as possible. Such treatment give the best financial return." I have to disagree. What's in the farmer's best interest is to raise as many animals as possible as quickly as possible as cheaply as possible. There is a reason grass-fed beef is more expensive than corn-fed beef: it costs more to raise. Since consumers often want more food for lower prices, the incentive is for farmers to maximize their production while minimizing their costs. Obviously, having very sick or dead animals does not help the farmer, however, so there is a line somewhere. Where that line is drawn is the question.
