WRTV-TV Channel 6 will expand its news staff and join its local rivals in offering extended news programming on Saturday and Sunday mornings, starting Sept. 7.

The ABC affiliate said its weekday “Good Morning Indiana” program will air on Saturdays from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., and on Sundays from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. The station will add eight new employees as part of the weekend news lineup.

“This is a major investment in talent and resources for RTV6. Users on all of our platforms will benefit,” news director Terri Cope-Walton said in a statement.

The station has yet to announce who will anchor the weekend morning newscasts.

In 2011, WRTV was purchased by Cincinnati-based E.W. Scripps Co. as part of a nine-station sale by New York-based McGraw-Hill Cos. totaling $212 million.

Once a ratings leader, WRTV saw ratings ebb under McGraw-Hill ownership.

There also have been a number of changes in on-air talent. Longtime anchor Grace Trahan left in September. In January, the station debuted new morning anchors Marc Mullins and Beth Vaughn. Another change made by the station: adding two meteorologists during morning newscasts.

“With the growth of our newly reformatted Monday through Friday edition of ‘Good Morning Indiana,’ we felt the time was right to expand to weekend mornings,” general manager Larry Blackerby said in a statement.
