Dallas-based AT&T Inc. is planning several improvements to its Indianapolis-area wireless network, including the installation
of nine new cell towers this year.
Executives of the telephone, Internet and television services company joined Mayor Greg Ballard Wednesday morning to make
the announcement.
In preparing for the city’s hosting of the 2012 Super Bowl, AT&T plans to add coverage and capacity at Lucas Oil
Stadium and the Indiana Convention Center, as well as area hotels, shopping malls and other areas expected to attract large
numbers of visitors.
AT&T also plans to deploy temporary Wi-Fi coverage in areas where tailgating festivities might occur.
“Indianapolis is hosting the biggest football game of 2012, and fans attending want to be able to share their experience
as it’s happening, with friends and family, whether it’s through a voice call, text message, e-mail or picture
and video messaging,” AT&T Indiana President George Fleetwood said in a statement.
A spokeswoman for AT&T said the company does not disclose dollar figures for investments before they’re completed.
Fleetwood said in a press release that AT&T spent about $925 million on its Indiana wireless and wireline networks from
2008 to 2010, including $225 million in the Indianapolis area.
