It’s a bird, it’s a plane—it’s another cloud computing center flying into Indianapolis.

Evansville-based nGenX Corp. is opening a local office to meet the increased demand for outsourced data centers. Such so-called "cloud computing" centers deliver software and other services via the Internet to help clients reduce their own IT infrastructure and storage costs.

nGenX initially will employ three people in Indianapolis with employment expected to grow later this year, said company spokeswoman Janet Cinelli.

The company is also opening data centers in Lafayette and Louisville.

“Our goal is to become the major regional provider of technology infrastructure,” said Robert Bye, executive vice president of nGenX.

The region has become a bastion of cloud computing firms, not the least of which is Indianapolis-based BlueLock, which has a 13,000-square-foot data center on the northwest side. BlueLock is chaired by local technology entrepreneur Mark Hill.

nGenX was formed in 2000 and purchased in 2004 by Evansville-based Q-Comm Corp., which reports annual sales of $240 million. Sister companies of nGenX include Cinergy MetroNet, an Evansville firm offering digital cable, satellite and telephone service.
