Sony plans Blu-ray disc boost at Indiana factory

Back to TopCommentsE-mailPrint

Sony officials plan to spend $72 million on new and upgraded equipment at its western Indiana factory, with most of that going toward Blu-ray disc manufacturing.

The equipment investment for the Sony DADC plant in Terre Haute follows the company's announcement in January that it would close a compact disc manufacturing plant in New Jersey and increase its Indiana work force.

The Tribune-Star reported that company attorney Rick Shagley told Terre Haute City Council members that the project would help retain the plant's some 1,300 jobs and perhaps add 100 workers.

While CD sales have declined four straight years, Sony spokeswoman Lisa Gephardt says it expects the greater capacity for Blu-ray discs, which allows them to hold 3-D content, will keep them in demand.
