The band that was preparing to perform at the Indiana State Fair before a fatal stage collapse has been named as a defendant in a potential lawsuit in a notice sent to the state attorney general.

The tort claim by the family of 22-year-old Jennifer Haskell names the country band Sugarland and its members, agents and employees among 15 potential defendants.

Sugarland and its manager also are named in a tort claim by the parents of Haskell's best friend, Alina Bigjohny.

Haskell and Bigjohny were among seven people who died after the stage rigging collapsed during strong winds before the Aug. 13 concert. More than 40 others were injured.

The Associated Press left a message seeking comment for Sugarland's attorney.

Indiana has received 21 notices of potential lawsuits to date.

  • Foolish
Why don't they add the vendors who were selling t-shirts, the ushers and the fans that were there. For all us who were there that night. Do I get my point across Sugarland did nothing wrong, if anything we ought to thank the bands manager for holding a prayer before attempting to go on stage. My cousin is their production Assistant and she is still shaken about it.
  • Notice of Tort Claim
Filing a notice of tort claim as to Sugarland accomplishes nothing. Filing the notice is a requirement prior to filing suit against the state. It has nothing to do with, and no effect on, any claim against a non-governmental entity.

This is perfect case to demonstrate the need for tort reform in this country. You can guarantee these "injured" would not be going after all of these people that were obviously not responsible, if that in they event they lost or the lawsuit was found to be frivolous, would responsible for their damages and legal fees. Imagine the legal fees that will be paid out defending people that had absolutely nothing to do with accident.

In cases like this, attorneys go after anybody and everybody. They may even go after the MC who told people the show would be going on.
