A small beer brewery in southern Indiana plans to expand its operations and more than double its brewing capacity.

Upland Brewing Co. expects to spend $3 million on equipment and buying and renovating a former RCA Thomson warehouse south of Bloomington's downtown. The Herald-Times reports the expansion will allow Upland to increase production of its 20 beers from the current 11,000 barrels a year to 25,000 barrels.

Upland president Doug Dayhoff says its sales have tripled over the past five years and that brewers have squeezed all the capacity they can from its original equipment.

Upland's original Tap Room restaurant will remain open on the north side of downtown Bloomington.

Mayor Mark Kruzan says he hopes the new brewery will spur development along the city's B-Line hiking trail.

Upland also has a tasting room and small brewing operation at 4842 N. College Ave. in Indianapolis. Its products are sold statewide through wholesale distributors that supply liquor stores and bars.
