Whirlpool to cut 1,100 jobs, close Indiana plant

Whirlpool Corp. said today that it will cut 1,100 jobs by closing a refrigerator factory in Evansville.

The jobs will be eliminated in mid-2010.

The Benton Harbor, Mich.-based appliance maker is still deciding what to do with another 300 employees who work at a product-development center at the Evansville location.

Whirlpool plans to move the main Evansville production work to Mexico and another yet-to-be-decided location.

The company has aggressively cut costs as demand for big-ticket items has shrunk in the recession.

Al Holaday, Whirlpool's vice president of North American manufacturing, said the cuts were "difficult but necessary."

The closing comes a month after General Electric Co. said it had reversed plans to close its refrigerator plant in Bloomington. GE announced in January 2008 it would close the plant due to losses caused by declining sales of side-by-side units and rising material and labor costs.

However, GE said in July that federal incentives for energy-efficient appliances could result in the plant staying open until 2013.

The original closing was to have tossed 900 out of work. Of the 720 still on the payroll, 190 will be laid off this fall due to sluggish conditions.

  • I stopped buying Thomsen products after they laid off several people in Indiana and shipped the jobs to Mexico. I bought an entire house of top of the line Whirlpool products because they employed so many people in Indiana. Now that Whirlpool has decided that their bottom line is more important than people, then I will now sell all of my whirlpool appliances (washer, dryer, range, microwave, and fridge) and buy GE since many people I know are employed here in this state by GE and they changed their mind and kept open the Bloomington plant. I bought a Honda instead of a Chrysler, GM, or Ford because they opened a plant here while at the same time the aforementioned "big three" continued to layoff people and build inefficient cars that did not meet my fuel consumption needs. I've owned several American cars and find that they are just as good as the others, but whoever invests in people is who gets my business!

  2. We are a nation of speed. All of our younger lives are filled with deadlines, quotas and bottom lines. We start to ease out of the pressured rat-race when we finally see "retirement." The most enjoyable travel on the planet is passenger rail service. Indy to Chicago does not beat Megabus or Southwest Airlines in speed. Passenger rail however has the best seating, mammoth legroon, seat backs that recline to more than 45 degrees and employers that really want you to return as a customer. Indiana municipalities need to maintain subsidies to support this transportation mode. Losing it is loss for all of us.
