WIBC wins Marconi Award for station of year

Emmis Communication Corp.’s WIBC-FM 93.1 won the 2009 Marconi Radio Award for Large-Market Station of the Year yesterday in a ceremony in Philadelphia.

The annual Marconi Awards, presented by the National Association of Broadcasters, are considered to be the industry’s top honor.

Rick Cummings, president of Emmis’ global radio division, accepted WIBC’s award and dedicated it to the late Tom Severino, who led WIBC from 1994 until his death in July.

In late 2007, Emmis officials moved WIBC from the AM dial, where it had been for decades, to the FM dial, where it has seen its audience grow.

The Marconi Radio Awards were established in 1989 and named after inventor and Nobel Prize winner Guglielmo Marconi.

  • What WIBC have they been listening to? The one I listen to has dropped all the local folks worth listening to.
