Cummins shortens work week at Columbus factory

Engine maker Cummins Inc. is cutting a day from the work week of 350 workers at one of its central Indiana factories.

The company says slowing demand led to the decision to scale back hours for the workers at its Columbus Fuel Systems Plant. That four-day workweek will continue indefinitely.

Cummins spokesman Jon Mills tells The Republic in Columbus that the company also has reduced the workweek at factories in Jamestown, N.Y., and overseas in Brazil.

The Columbus-based company said last month it had instituted a global hiring freeze after seeing a recent drop in sales in some of its markets in North America, China and Brazil.

Cummins says the Columbus Fuel Systems Plant ships about 70 percent of the components it makes to other Cummins factories.
